I have tried single and even double spline shims and noticed very little difference. Today I tried something completely different. After removing spline from old blade, I inserted used blade into a Brooklyn with faceted edge towards rear of razor, then put new blade on top of it. My shave was a completely different experience. I could feel the blade as with my MMOC or '24 and it shaved very close---almost aggressive. Has anyone else tried this, seems to me this trial resembles the blade thickness of older blades without changing the angle of the cutting edge.. I like it, the Brooklyn really mowed my beard closer than normal.
This took me more time than I thought it would. The problem, I started out with a shave with a nice shiny 1912. And all I can say is Wow! I forgot how I enjoyed the control of this shaver. The sound is something I enjoy, but the closeness of the shave is terrific. I needed to do it twice, the first one was so good.
Then, I certainly tried the reverse despined blade as a shim. Going into it I was thinking that it would clog up, or cause some sort of issues, but Yikes - it makes for a wonderful shave for me as well. It did indeed shave very close - and gave me one of my best chin shaving experiences - close and huggable with wonderful tactile feedback. I found it a real pleasure.
I am going to switch back and forth bw the two for a bit more here. I want to get a better feel for the difference bw the shimmed/original technique. But I must say, the shimmed shave was very, very good. I just need to make sure now that it isn't just my pleasure at getting back in the saddle with a 12 - or as you say, mlb549 - The Brooklyn.
I would definitely suggest others give it a shot and see what you think.
I have in the past used shims on some of the Vintage Razors [ 1924 and younger]with varying results. The performance difference for me is in the 1924, in which I use a 1/2 spine shim fitted under the spine of the blade in use. The 1924 rather than feeling harsh is turned into a very smooth shaver, yet still very efficient in producing a really close all round Shave.
