My latest find, a nice 1924 in a nickel-plated metal box:
As can be seen, this is an early 1924 with the rounded teeth on the comb and the pedestal type base. It has the full length (2.5") hex handle. There is no plating loss on razor or case, although the case has some scratches on the top.
The ebay seller called this an "unusual" set and dated it 1925-1927. Why do we care what the seller thought? More on this in a moment.
I had purchased this as sort of a companion set to my 12 tooth 1914 set, also in a metal case, and indeed they do look nice together.
At a glance these boxes look similar, but there are many differences. The 1924 box (on the right) is heavier, 4.0 oz vs 3.4 oz empty. As can be seen, it has more rounded corners and a more domed top. It is slightly longer and wider, but not quite as tall. It has a single piano type hinge, while the 1914 case has two small hinges.
One other detail earns this set a special place in my collection. I normally don't put much stock in a seller's description of a razor. I don't really pay much attention to the seller at all, other than checking his feedback score.
As they often do, this seller had included his business card with the razor. I glanced at it . . . and did a huge double-take:
"Robert K. Waits Safety Razor Historian and Collector"
Ha! A genuine Waits He's written himself into the history, so do consider that one a real gem (lower case).
Notice the button is different on the 1914 to the 1924.
I have one of the original GEM 'Peerless' from the '20s in a case similar to your 1914 but with one blade holder and a slot for the "in use" blade to rest. I also have a Star 1912 and an Ever Ready 1912 in the same style cases. Over to the 1924. I have that case with the 'Brilliant' 1912 from Ever Ready. I think that style is a little later, into the '30s. That said, the metal Ever Ready plate pins it to the mid'20s, as does the pillar base style for the Shovel Head razor.
wchnu: If I liked him more I might actually feel bad about that.
