One of the guys on the other forum, who does use the vintage stuff got a sample of it today. So he will be using it tomorrow and I'll know more then about how the lather compares. He's sending me some of the vintage stuff and I should get that tomorrow. The cool thing is he also lives in North Dakota so we can send mail and get it the next day between the two of us.
The other guy that I sent a sample puck off to hasn't gotten it yet.
so when I find out about the lather I'll report back! Cross your fingers that I was in the ballpark of getting the lather right just by going by the ingredient list.
I have gotten shipping confirmation on my shipment of tallow (I ordered 50 pounds) and that will be here on the 6th. So once that arrives I can start producing more bars of it.
I'm a huge fan, and because if the Kriger grocery store chain clearance I have stockpiled enough to last a lifetime. I have about a dozen vintage pucks, including one rose scented stick and two menthol. In my rotation I am using one from each of the plants, Glastonbury, Cranford, Glen Rock and Pittsburg.
I do think the older ones work a bit better than the current Combe formulation but it works very well, and I like using a product that I can pick up while I'm getting milk, bread and eggs.
Exactly... My Wife and I are sad to see our local old school Grocery store is closing in 2 months because the rent's too high.I used to grab a puck of Williams there every now and then to stock up.The the big chain yuppie type combo grocery/drug store across town is soon going to be all we've got near us to buy groceries, all they have is Gillette Fusion kind of stuff.
Solid dependable no BS shave soap that works good enough for me,lathers up easily.Even the lower end fancy stuff costs 5 times as much as Williams, never found one that performed even twice as well.
Hmmmm...I think the CVS Drugstore down the street might have Williams.

As a huge fan of Williams soap I'm going to take this opportunity to show off my latest vintage Williams acquisition. Found these ten pucks listed on Craigslist in a town about an hour away from where I live, got them all for $40, which I was very happy with. Very nice guy said he found these in a box that belonged to his dad, there were actually twelve but he wanted to keep two as keepsakes. He seemed really happy to sell them to someone who really appreciates them.
Identical packages from the Cranford plant, no ingredients list and all have the same wrapper on the pucks. I've got enough vintage soap to last several years, but this really helped the inventory!
Rollin like a big wheel, and cuttin like a big knife.
That was a great shave. As can be seen I do not use a pile of lather. A good solid slick layer is all that is needed.
A solid slick layer....That's what I'm talking about...I'd been wondering if that Semogue 830 brush I just got would perform better than the drugstore brushes I've been using exclusively. It does,I'm getting that solid slick even layer I wasn't achieving before.Much nicer to drag a blade through.
Seems like it takes more effort to produce lather (maybe because I'm babying the new brush with lighter pressure?) but man it is a whole new ballgame applying lather to my face....now I can effortlessly paint on a uniform even coat hell without the brush's bristles causing uneven texture,it's just like the difference between paint brushes when you're painting trim on your house.
