With Himalayan Heights, I found the saltiness gave a tautness post-shave which is actually something I quite like and usually achieve from more alcoholic aftershaves. I liked it from the sample that I've got ... and it's on my list to buy a puck of. The saltiness is there post-shave, something that can be tasted an hour or so afterwards if you give yourself a further wash a little bit later. I can see how it would not be for everyone though.
Strong & Scottish. My absolute favourite ... ever, I think. I absolutely love it! I also have a tester of what I hope is a forthcoming aftershave to match. It is NOT like just splashing Scotch on your face - as an aftershave, it's peaty, very peaty, sweet and very slippery smooth to apply. Supreme post-shave feel, more like a balm but from an aftershave splash. That is high praise coming from someone who can't abide balms. As a soap. Supreme! Pure connoisseur. I am a huge fan of those deep, peaty whiskies namely from Islay and will always reach for that over any other region. Strong & Scottish also has that medicinal twang found in Laphroaig, my favourite whisky. Love it! Absolutely love it!
. o 0 (Somebody stop Paul before he goes into full Faulkner mode, please!)
Paul is spot on. Whilst not yet available, I believe these aftershaves will become an instant success. Except for the Strong & Scottish, which will find a niche market with olfactory perverts.
But the Bay & Rum is killer, as is the Dark Limes. The Bay & Rum soft soap will need some work, but they're on it. Which is something I really like about this manufacture: they liberally distribute samples, and actually listen to their customers. I wish they wouldn't listen to Paul WRT Strong & Scottish, but that's a different story entirely.
That said, it's not that bad. I just find the thought of shaving with something that smells like 30 year Laphroaig hard to get used to.
You know what? I think the Bay & Rum is actually right on ...
All too often, it's Bay Rum, Limes & Peppercorn ... and ... and ... and ... when actually just bay is a perfectly nice scent on its own. The addition of rum is lovely. I make my own for which the liquid part is rum and witch hazel. Meißner Tremonia are mixing up a concoction that is far more professional and adding in these single-minded, yet all engrossing scents, is very refreshing.
Strong & Scottish as an aftershave is NOT whisky. It is peaty. It does have that sweet, almost medicinal twang, but it is NOT whisky. The soap is. I thought the subtle difference was very well done, because splashing on a fine Islay as aftershave does not really appeal to me, either.
I am NOT a balms person. I much prefer a dry, taut feeling, something which these aftershave splashes do not give ... but they do what an aftershave should, and do it well. I think it's a splash that both aftershave splash and aftershave balm people would both like. Clever.
However, I really, really like two of them, especially the Black Pepper & Coriander. Genius. And even the almond is not sickeningly sweet, my main problem with US artisan soaps.)
I keep having a sniff of the Black Pepper & Coriander. It really is strong! In the "Natural Brown" version, the nostrils are filled very quickly and I think that's the resin that does that - it's a strong nasal carrier.
I've been thinking about this one and while I do like that pepperiness, I think it could pep up a different scent more effectively. I'm thinking tobacco, a scent which is often quite light, actually, and one that can work well with bay, allspice, even tea, something to just pick it up. I think the pepper could do that really well, especially a classy tobacco scent. That, or jump right out of the box and go for strawberry and pepper
From this lot, I am a big fan of the Guaiacwood & Bergamot and the Stone Pine & Cypress. In fact, I've bought a couple of bottles of Pino Silvestre to accompany the latter, an aftershave and an EDT; Puig Quorum plays so well with the former.
Tomorrow evening, I'll try the Bitter Almond & Texas Cedar.
Almond my smarmy behind, Paul. Guaiacwood & Bergamot and the Stone Pine & Cypress are almost there, I think. The Bay & Rum needs some work as far as the soft soap is concerned. The soap, paste, and resin soap are perfect. The aftershave balms also need some work, but the so called splashes are stellar.
So, enough of this already. I like the stuff I have, and I am very much looking forward to everything else. Once the scents have stabilised.
