Paul, enjoy those new Damis. About the Star, yes, they do look quite primitive. The steel handle version with the star patterns looks like a magician's staff. The wooden handle version looks like knight's mace well to me it does.
In time, I'll rise to spending more than a few bucks on a razor and jump into this kind of purchase. My most expensive razor is a Streamline. They command a pretty penny in any market. These go for more in my currency, a lot more.
I don't own a Streamline ... sigh. They are the Rolex of single edge razors.
It is my personal opinion that you have not missed very much! I find it a difficult razor that is a bit angle sensitive, not a razor that you can just pick up and shave with, to get the best from it you would (IMHO) need to use it daily.
For me (other than my Contour II) it is my least loved SE razor. It is certainly the best looking SE by quite some margin which is why I believe it has such a cult status. I genuinely believe that a cheap and cheerful brassy old 1912 from a junk shop costing five dollars will outshave it every day. I accept many hugely experienced SE users on this forum will disagree but as usual YMMV!
Dick, I have read other people with the same sentiments as you concerning the Streamline model. Due to the high prices and the opinions exactly as yours I am in no hurry to obtain one. At this point I have 23 single edge razors plus 11 injectors and 8 double edge razors. It is hard finding storage space for everything I own.
Ironically, I own a Gem Contour I and it is the least models that I like of the late Gem line. I have recently obtained a Gem Feather Weight. A long time ago when I first started using SE razors I owned a Feather Weight which I gave away. Now with more experience I tried the Feather Weight again and it is (IMO) a very good performer. Still, no matter how much I try the Contour I just doesn't work well for me. Without a doubt the 1912 series (at least for me) is the pinnacle of singe edge razors.
RocketMan: My wife is a nurse at a local hospital and brought me home a razor they use for such fun - it is an UM style (unmentionable!) made of plastic and dull as a a Derby blade run over some sandpaper - maybe one of those was used???????
