As you can see from the pictures I own both the hollow steel handle version (which came in a tin) and the wooden handle version. I am not sure if long wooden handle versions are rare but I can't seem to find any info on this model.
Can anyone help me date this particular Star lather catcher? Is the wooden handle version of the 1902 older then the hollow steel handle version? Did this model come in a case or tin box?
I think that you have a GEM handle on that Star. Starting with the Zinn at the end of the 1800s and for a little over ten years GEM used a handle like that on several models.. Kampfe did use a wooden handle but they were of a simpler design.
Here is a Zinn.
A lovely GEM Junior. The Elite model of 1911. One of my favourites.
And lastly a Star with rosewood handle circa 1902/3.

Rocketman, I see what you mean about the handle not being original. I've thought about this too since I have only seen the handle on my Star on older Gem razors as well. With all the information I have been trying to muster I have found this small (free download pdf file) that has this bit of information about the Star razor in question.
If you look at the picture of the Star 1902 razor with the wooden handle in this snippet (from the Safety Razor Compendium) the razor is identified as Type HR-14A. I have just recently found this bit of information and I don't have the rest of the document. Still, I am left not knowing anything about it. Maybe this handle was interchanged between both Gem and Star razors in one point in the company's history? The picture makes it appear to be a legitimate incarnation of the 1902 Star if this is so I've never seen one before except the one that I own.

Oh, Joe ... I don't know how to tell you this, but you've got a Frankenrazor there ... botched, badly botched and an abomination to the single edge shaving world. I am duty bound to request that you send it to me for immediate incineration.
Who am I kidding? What a razor! Did you get your answer?
Kevin, a little late for my reply but thanks. I know that you have tons of lather catchers many of which I don't own and never will.
Promoteo, gracias en tiempo te voy a mandar mas informacion sobre esta maquinilla lol. Thank you in time I will send you more info about this razor.
Paul, for quite a while I thought it was a frankenrazor but as I mentioned to Rocketdude it isn't. See the 7th post (my post) for the picture (taken from Waits) and you will see that my 1902 is listed there. I have seen the standard Star 1902 rosewood long wooden handle (5th post by Rocketman) but never with the specific handle of mine.
For a bit over a year now I have only seen another 1902 exactly like mine sell. I found out it came in a case with a few blades and stropper. The set was labeled as "The Dandy" it was going for $250. I consider this SE to be one of my best models. Compared to the lighter steel hollow handle version this one has better balance and it's a pleasure to use. The Star 1902 lather catchers feel a bit rough but they are not aggressive.
